Nyepi, the New Year’s Day itself, is supposed to be a day of silence, prayer and meditation. It is a day of inner reflection for the Balinese when nobody is allowed to eat, drink, drive, smoke, or go outside their houses or compounds. The purpose is to make each village, in fact the whole island, appear abandoned to the evil spirits in the hope that the malicious spirits, roused awake the night before, will find Bali completely barren of life and leave the island. There should be no presence of light, any form of work is not allowed and no venturing outdoors too. <br />
