SaffronStays Amaya is a signature estate in Kannur. Restored to its original glory, this 5-bedroom heritage homestay is nestled amidst the calming greenery of Kerala.
The historic estate with a stepping pond and a traditional Kerala-style spa experience was built nearly 300 years ago and has seen innumerable historic events.
The villa is located 15 minutes (7 km) away from Kannur International Airport, 3 hours (92 km) from Kozhikode and 4.5 hours (180 km) from Mysore. Guests can explore local tourist attractions like Velliyamparamba Waterfalls 10 mins (5.5 km), Palukachippara View Point 20 mins (11 km) and Pazhassi Dam just 20 mins (10 km).
Backstory:
The estate is known as the “Illam” of the local village. An “Illam” served as the tharavad (ancestral house) of Namboodiri Brahmin families who served as patriarchs of the village temple. Passed on from one generation to the other, the Illam has always been the community pillar for local villagers.
The entire structure of the Illam is built using teak wood and laterite stone that was mined from the local Malabar quarries.
The pond on the right side of the home is a stepping pond made from the same laterite stone. The pond draws its water from underground sources and has steps slopping down to the bottom from all sides. A sloping roof was built near the pond which was used by women in the house for washing and bathing.
SaffronStays Amaya is an integral part of the community festivities. Theyyam, a form of Keralite worship where locals perform various dance forms including Kathakali and folklore, is a unique festival that takes place annually in December, in and around the locale. Guests staying in Amaya can enjoy the joyous celebrations and experience the traditional culture of Kerala.

Homestay Layout:
Enter this unique heritage homestay through a traditional Kerala-style entrance with short steps.
As you enter, you are welcomed by a ‘Nadukuttam’ or inner courtyard, one of 3 within the home.
To the left, you will find the ‘Mandapam’ or the sitting area with a mini library. The Illam also has a Pooja Room and a ‘Yajana Shala’ or shrine as an ode to the Gods.
2 of the bedrooms are located on the ground floor to the left and right of the courtyard. Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom. The ground floor also has a Massage Room where guests can avail of a Kalari Ayurveda massage at an additional cost.
A flight of stairs (15 steps) leads you to the first floor. 3 bedrooms are located on this floor. Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom.
The first floor of the home also has a balcony and an extra room for additional guests.
There is a pond on the left side of the home and a ‘Kalari’ court for outdoor games like volleyball and badminton on the right side of the home.
There is also a poultry shed and cow shed on the estate.
